What is RAM in a computer or laptop?
RAM stands for Random-Access Memory, but what does it mean?
Your computer RAM is essentially short term memory where data is stored as per the requirement of the processor.
It should not be confused with long-term data stored on your hard drive, which remains there even when your computer is turned off.
Whenever you play a game from your computer's hard drive or stream a movie from the Internet, your computer's processor stores all the data needed to play the game or watch a movie in RAM.
This is so that your processor can get to it quickly.
Once you finish playing your game or watching your movie and you turn it off, the processor no longer needs that data, so it replaces it with the next task you give it.
RAM can slow down your computer if the processor isn't enough to do what you asked for.
If your processor wants to load more data than your computer's RAM, it will need to go back to the hard drive or the Internet to retrieve the information.
